Innovative Online Equine Auction A Massive Success
The inaugural online auction held by Maria Costello of Equine Auctions Ireland saw buyers from 9 countries purchase 20 Connemara Ponies for a total of €108,500.
Equine Auctions Ireland is the brainchild of Tipperary Native, Maria Costello a well known agent and showjumper. The innovative auction platform allows sellers to upload images, videos, vet certs and descriptions while buyers bid and purchase without leaving their own homes - the new normal in many industries.
Launched less than 2 months ago, the sale attracted a global clientele interested in Connemara ponies. The salestopper was 9 year old eventing mare, Cillbhrid Pippa that reached €20,000 who will continue her career in the United States. The clearance rate was 83% with an average price of €X (€XX excluding the sales topper).
“This first auction has shown that both buyers and sellers are adaptable. The sale of Irish horses can continue to thrive at home and internationally.” Maria said “It has been fantastic to showcase Irish ponies globally, many have already begun their journeys to the States, Asia, Europe as well as Ireland and the UK.”
Vendors welcomed the new concept for the ease of both listing and selling ponies. “It can be difficult to find the right buyers for our ponies privately. To be able to show them to genuine buyers without leaving the yard is a huge benefit for us.” [Seller comment, Michael Walsh Ballinasloe] There was over 4,000 visitors to the auction website based in 37 countries around the globe which highlights both the interest and curiosity of the industry in the new online venture.
The advantages of the auction format has many benefits for buyers also. “At the moment, it isn’t possible to travel to view ponies but even when we can travel, it is a big time commitment to view individual ponies or even go to a sales. It was great to have online access to ponies for sale with vet certs and videos which could be viewed easily. [Buyer comment, Rhianna Cooper]
The auctions are currently fully digital which offers great flexibility for sellers and provides a cost effective platform to market their animals. In addition to providing an online marketplace for buyers and sellers, Equine Auctions Ireland can support buyers with transport and logistics when the sale is complete.
Equine Auctions Ireland have already turned their attention to the next auction which takes place on the 18th & 19th of July. Registrations for The Amateur & Leisure Auctions are now being accepted and will close on Tuesday June 30th. The catalogue will include 25 horses, 15 ponies and 10 cobs which will be selected based on experience, records and all round suitability for the category.
